Transportation Resources

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Research Library operates as a branch of the New Jersey State Library. While this guide was developed for NJDOT employees, the general public may also use it to find transportation-related research.

TC3 (Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council) is a program within AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) that develops training courses for transportation technical staff in three areas:  construction, maintenance and materials.  All TC3 classes are offered online as web-based training.

NJDOT employees have access to free AASHTO TC3 training. Use your NJDOT email address to create an AASHTO account at store.transportation.org. You may then enroll in courses under the "Technical Training" banner. Please email library@dot.nj.gov for more information

INNOVATION That is the important idea that this diagram and the acronym STIC  (State Transportation Innovation Council) are all about.  Proven innovations are used to rapidly deliver a modern and high quality transportation system to the Garden State. The results are: shorter time to project completion; improved safety; less congestion; and better environmental sustainability.  Many players work together for this to happen, as the diagram shows.

NJ STIC is part of a national network formed by the Federal Highway Administration (FWHA). There is a STIC in every state of the U.S.

Did you know the New Jersey State library has thousands of ebooks and audiobooks? As a State employee with a library card you can borrow them, instantly, for free, using just the device in your hand.

Known as the “Green Book,” A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, 7th Edition, was published in 2018.  Chapter 1: A New Framework for Geometric Design, has been completely rewritten. It introduces the updated approach to design, with specific design guidance throughout each chapter.

This and past print editions are held at the DOT Research Library. The online version is available to NJDOT staff; please email library@dot.nj.gov for more information.

The Bureau of Research of the NJDOT uses this website to gather and share ideas as the first step to develop funding research proposals (RFPs).  The Bureau's message is: We are interested in your research ideas – particularly, ideas that can turn problems into solutions that can be implemented.

There are test guides with sample questions for specific job titles. The test guides are not duplicates of New Jersey Civil Service examinations.

Guides are available to check out at the DOT Research Library and the NJ State Library. Some are available as ebooks.

DOT Library has in print all research reports published by TRB (Transportation Research Board) on these topics: Highway (NCHRP); Transit (TCRP); Airport (ACRP); Hazardous Materials HMCRP); Freight (NCFRP); and Rail ((NCRRP). Most of the printed publications are also available electronically through the TRB website at no cost.

This is the final report of the NCFRP Program, which has examined ways to improve the nation's freight transportation system. Recently, much emphasis has been placed on proposals to shift freight from highways to rail, based on goals of reducing emissions and highway congestion.
