Obituaries can be a great source of information about an ancestor, but can sometimes be a challenge to find.
To locate an obituary, ideally you would know the date of death or burial of the person of interest, and also the newspaper in which the obituary was likely to appear. Generally, if an obituary was published, it will appear in the newspaper within about a week of the death or burial, however it can be later.
If the name of the newspaper is not known, determine the town/location where the person died. You can then find out what the local newspapers of that area were in a specific time period. The local public library is a valuable resource to determine the newspapers of the area.
In addition, the Directory of New Jersey Newspapers, 1766-1970, can help in determining what papers were published in specific time periods for towns in New Jersey.
