Transportation Resources

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Research Library is affiliated with the New Jersey State Library. While this guide was developed for NJDOT employees, the general public may also use it to find transportation-related research.

Find Books, eBooks, and Articles

Type your research topic in the box here and NJSL Discovery will search the New Jersey State Library catalog for books and e-books; hundreds of databases for articles; and the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. 

To search only the New Jersey State Library Catalog (for books) click on Traditional Catalog.

Searching the Catalog

Use the catalog link below to browse the NJDOT and NJ State Library's test book collection. Sort by "Title" to browse in alphabetical order:

Catalog Search and Request

The NJSL catalog is available from the main page link above.

Use the drop-down menu to insert a title, author, or another term into the search box. Press the red button to continue.

Click the "Advanced" link to create additional filters. Within the search boxes, selecting AND provides results with all terms entered. The OR option brings results with any term entered.

Use the "Limits" section to narrow results by collection (e.g. "Test Books") and/or location.

Both print and eBooks will appear in search results. Instructions for accessing electronic exam guides are available here.

Click the "Request Copy" or "Request Item" links to put a hold on an item. Enter your library card barcode to continue.

Select your pick-up location and click "Request." You can check your queue position from this screen.

You can also use the "Library Card Account" tab to view your profile.

Accessing eBooks from eLibraryNJ

eBooksNJSL

eBooks at the New Jersey State Library are available from a variety of sources. Instructions for accessing and downloading eBooks and audiobooks are available on the NJSL's website.

To access eBooks from eLibraryNJ to a Windows PC, first click on the "Electronic Resource" link provided within the NJSL's catalog.

Click the "Borrow" button.

Choose "New Jersey State Library," and enter your library card barcode number. Email library@dot.nj.gov if you have any questions. Click the "Sign In" button.

Select a time period and click the "Borrow" button. Then click the "Read Now in Browser" prompt.

Click the top or bottom of the screen to access reading options. You can zoom in, search the text, changing viewer settings, and download the book to your browser for offline reading.

To return the book, log into your eLibrary NJ account. Under "My Account," select the "Loans" link. You may now return the item.

eLibrary NJ items can also be accessed through the Libby app. Detailed instructions (with video) are available here. Instructions for accessing titles via other devices are available on the eLibrary website.

Request Books and Articles with ILLIAD

Request Books and Articles with ILLIAD

New Jersey State Library's ILLIAD service allows you to request books and articles that the library does not license or own, but that you might need for your classwork and research.  Use ILLIAD to request specialized materials not available from Discovery search.

Requesting an item is simple after registration. You will need your library card number.
