Revolutionary War

Explore Revolutionary War resources at the New Jersey State Library

Welcome!

The Revolutionary War was fought between the new United States of America and Great Britain 1775-1783.  The United States were originally British colonies.  The United States desired to become a separate country due to lack of representation in Great Britain's Parliament.  Great Britain fought to retain their colonial holdings in North America.  The new United States consisted of thirteen former British colonies:

  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • Connecticut
  • Rhode Island
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Virginia
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Georgia

The Revolutionary War history of our state is rich and complex. New Jersey officially became a state with the passage of its state constitution on July 2, 1776.  As an important central point in the new United States, New Jersey was the site of various battles, skirmishes, and military camps.

This guide is designed to share some of our Revolutionary War resources available at the New Jersey State Library.  For ease of navigation, the guide is divided by collection.

New Jersey's Constitutions

Did you know that the State of New Jersey has had three constitutions since we became a state in 1776?

Image of handwritten document, New Jersey State Constitution 1776

  • Our first Constitution was ratified July 2, 1776 in the midst of the Revolutionary War and provided a basic structure for our state government.
  • 1776 Constitution gave only age and property value requirements in order to vote.  This meant that between 1776 and 1809, women and black men were able to vote in New Jersey!
  • The Constitution leads off with colonists' grievances against England: "...And whereas George the third, King of Great Britain, has refused Protection to the good People of these Colonies; and, by assenting to sundry Acts of the British Parliament, attempted to subject them to the absolute Dominion of that Body; and has also made War upon themin the most cruel and unnatural Manner, for no other Cause than asserting their just Rights, all civil Authority under himis necessarily at an End, and a Dissolution of Government in each Colony has consequently taken Place. And whereas in the present deplorable Situation of these Colonies, exposed to the Fury of a cruel and relentless Enemy, some Form of Government is absolutely necessary, not only for the Preservation of good Order, but also the more effectually to unite the People, and enable them to exert their whole Force in their own necessary Defence..."
